TeleScript ProNEWS and Closed Captioning

TeleScript ProNEWS doesn’t do the actual caption insert on the video signal. It sends text data and formatting information to the devices that do the caption insertion, known as Closed Caption ENCODERS. All TVs have Closed Caption DECODERS – the decoder is required to view the captioned video.

ProNEWS is the only member of the TeleScript Software family that provides captioning interface.

In all, Closed Captioning is quite a complex subject. Probably the place to start is with the Wikipedia article that links to other sources of information. Also, you can find some good information on manufacturers and reseller’s sites such as these:

CLOSED CAPTIONING EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS

EEG-- (EEG is one of the most venerable manufacturers)

Evertz -- (Evertz has a variety of professional products)

Link-- (Link is also a long-time player in the game)

PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT RETAILERS

Markertek Retailer

B&H Photo - Retailer

The encoders are expensive and it’s possible there are rental houses that can provide the equipment.

This PDF attached to this article (ClosedCaptioning.pdf) has more details about configuring TeleScript ProNEWS for use with Encoders.

Also, the TeleScript ProNEWS help file has more info on how to set up the program for captioning, although the PDF linked above is more in detail.

With the advent of ubiquitous LAN networking and WiFi, there are encoders that communicate via these protocols, or using proprietary methods. TeleScript ProNEWS does require a serial interface. Read the manufacturer's product information to determine what sort of interface is required.
